K id-friendly fun in Mississippi knows no age limit. Parents get just as excited as children when the Bison Bus drives them

up close to the giant, prehistoric-looking

creatures at the Tupelo Buffalo Park and

Zoo. And Dad and Junior both get a kick out

of shooting down the Horn Island Blaster

slide at Gulf Islands Waterpark in Gulfport,

or racing each other down Whitewater

Express in Geyser Falls Water Theme Park

at Pearl River Resort near Philadelphia.

With attractions ranging from buffalo to

water rides, Mississippi offers tons of family

activities and entertainment. At the Mississippi

Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, watch

a diver feed fish in the aquarium, or look for

alligators in “The Swamp.” To see creatures

in the wild, take a kayak tour along the lower

Pascagoula River near Gautier, or board the

shrimp boat trip in Biloxi and see shrimp,

crabs and squid pulled from the Gulf waters.

Touch a tornado, operate a crane, and then

climb into a tree house along with the kids at

Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport.

One of the newest places to take the family is

the Mississippi Children’s Museum. It opened

in December 2010 at LeFleur’s Bluff State

Park in Jackson, with interactive exhibits

that are so much fun you won’t realize how

much you’re learning about science, nature,

and even architecture and engineering. Just

a mile away, try out the virtual technology

in the Participatory Room at the Mississippi

Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The whole

family can test their skills at championship

golf, take a penalty kick in soccer and measure

how fast they can throw a baseball.

Step back in time to sample fresh-roasted

peanuts and ice-cold colas at the Causeyville

General Store near Meridian. Then drive

to Meridian’s Highland Park, lift your child

up onto a hand-carved tiger or giraffe,

and settle into one of the chariots for

a ride on the 1904 Dentzel Carousel. It

will make you feel like a kid again.
