Some of the state’s top courses, designed
by the sport’s biggest names,
welcome the public. Mississippi Suits Golfers to a Tee
G olfers cannot live by the game alone, but many who come to Mississippi would like to try. The state has more than
80 courses open to the public, many of
them among the best in the country. And
when the sun goes down, Mississippi has
enough top-notch entertainment and
dining experiences to take your mind off
golf, at least until the sun rises again.
With 32 courses along the Mississippi Gulf
Coast alone, all but four of them accessible to
the public, it isn’t hard to find your favorite.
Arnold Palmer designed the course for The
Bridges Golf Club at Hollywood Casino in Bay
St. Louis, and a few years ago he refined the
design. More than 100 acres were re-grassed
with Tifway Bermuda sod, some bunkers
were relocated for better playability, and
several greens were raised a bit to improve
drainage. The Bridges is not only one of the
most demanding courses in the area but was
also the first resort course in the world to be
designated a Certified Silver Audubon Signature
Sanctuary for its sensitivity to the environment
and commitment to sustainable management.
The Preserve Golf Club in Biloxi is the only
other course in the state to earn that honor.
